In my 35 years of being an artist I’ve painted or drawn on just about everything…You name it I probably did it but never a surfboard. I always loved watching my son Kevin working on boards and always envied the freedom of subject matter and composition.
Both Kevin and I were recently contacted to see if we would each be willing to paint a surfboard for fundraiser for a Santa Cruz non profit organization called Changebound. They are hosting an event that will be bringing Bethany Hamilton to Santa Cruz for a screening of her movie “Soul Surfer”.
They needed the boards by early September which was not much notice so Kevin had to decline since he’s booked solid with work that he has to get out. I on the other hand had a little window of time so I took one of the boards.
At first I was thinking about doing something in Kevin’s style but at my age its difficult getting out of the comfort zone so I stuck with what I do best…Whales.
The board measures 5’10”. It is hand painted (no airbrush) in acrylic and clear coated with polyurethane.
